The Senate has temporarily stepped down the proposed amendments to the 2022 Electoral Act, citing time constraint and a need for deeper consultation.
In a motion by the senate majority leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, he appealed that the house allow the motion be stepped down, to allow the lawmakers understand cogent part of the framework, before it scales the second reading.
Responding to the prayer, the president of the senate, Godswill Akpabio, noted that the observations raised by the majority leader were valid, thereby approving the temporary suspension of the bill after a voice vote.
Akpabio added that Nigerians expect not “patchwork corrections,” but a holistic law that restores faith in the electoral process.
Among the notable proposals is the conduct of the 2027 Presidential and Governorship elections in November 2026, rather than February or March of the election year.
This provision effectively schedules the next presidential and governorship elections for November 2026, as the 185-day window before May 29, 2027, would fall within that period.
