Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has clarified that he is contesting the 2027 presidential election after the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) candidate, Donald Duke, expressed uncertainty over whether the activist was running for the presidency.
Duke, a former Cross River State governor, described Sowore as a “voice of conscience” in an interview with the Naija Unfiltered Podcast, saying the AAC candidate speaks on issues that some politicians may avoid discussing openly.
Responding on social media, Sowore thanked Duke for the description but said there was no uncertainty about his participation in the 2027 presidential election. He said his candidacy was reflected in the final list released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which also listed Duke as the PRP presidential candidate.
Sowore said his political ambition was not centred on gaining access to public office or its privileges but on what he described as an effort to fundamentally change Nigeria’s political system. He listed equal rights, justice, living wages, education, healthcare, security, electricity and housing among the issues the AAC would campaign on.
The AAC candidate also ruled out joining an opposition coalition if its primary objective was to replace President Bola Tinubu with another member of what he described as the existing political establishment.
Sowore said the AAC intended to pursue its own political agenda rather than disappear into a broader opposition arrangement. He concluded by acknowledging Duke’s description of him as a “voice of conscience,” while stressing that he would also be on the ballot in 2027.
He further referenced the presidential debate at the Nigerian Bar Association Annual General Conference in Port Harcourt, saying Duke’s late arrival had prevented him from addressing the issue of his candidacy during the event.
