Veteran Nigerian singer Sunny Neji has raised concerns over what he describes as a growing misunderstanding of love and relationships, warning that many people now equate intimacy solely with sex.
In an interview with Saturday Beats, the singer said a major misconception in modern relationships is the belief that love begins and ends with physical intimacy.
“The biggest misconception that a lot of people have about love and relationships is that they think that everything begins and ends with sex,” he said.
Neji stressed that genuine love is rooted in care, compassion and emotional understanding rather than physical expression alone.
“Love is just love. Love is when you care about someone, when you have empathy for someone, when you can put yourself in someone else’s position,” he explained.
According to the musician, empathy forms the bedrock of meaningful relationships and lasting affection. He argued that without the ability to genuinely understand and share in another person’s feelings, love cannot thrive.
“Without empathy, there cannot be love. The ability to empathise with someone else, that is what love is. Therefore, this generation must learn to empathise with others. Once you’re able to do that, love will just come naturally to you,” he added.
