SUNU Health Nigeria Limited has urged Nigerians to remain calm and vigilant following reports of an Ebola Virus Disease case in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), while calling for strict adherence to public health guidelines to prevent the spread of the virus.
The Health Maintenance Organisation made the appeal in a statement issued on Wednesday by its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Moyosore Olomola, following the reported confirmation by the Federal Ministry of Health and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC).
According to the statement, the case involved a Nigerian traveller who recently arrived from Uganda after visiting the Democratic Republic of the Congo, identified as an Ebola hotspot. The individual was reportedly receiving medical care in isolation, while contact-tracing efforts had commenced.
SUNU Health commended the authorities for activating emergency response measures to contain the situation and prevent further transmission, reaffirming its commitment to protecting its enrollees, healthcare providers, corporate clients and the wider public.
Olomola said the organisation would continue to monitor developments and share relevant guidance from public health authorities as the situation evolves.
He encouraged Nigerians to avoid panic, remain alert and seek prompt medical attention if symptoms developed following suspected exposure. He also expressed confidence in Nigeria’s public health institutions, citing the country’s previous success in containing Ebola outbreaks.
Ebola Virus Disease can spread through direct contact with the blood, body fluids or contaminated materials of an infected person. SUNU Health noted that infected individuals do not transmit the virus before symptoms appear.
As part of preventive measures, the organisation advised Nigerians to wash their hands frequently with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand sanitisers. It also warned against direct contact with the blood, body fluids and personal belongings of suspected or confirmed cases.
The firm urged members of the public to watch for symptoms such as fever, severe weakness, headache, vomiting and diarrhoea, particularly after possible exposure to the virus.
It further advised anyone who suspects exposure to notify public health authorities promptly, cooperate with contact-tracing teams and seek appropriate medical care.
SUNU Health also cautioned against spreading unverified information, urging Nigerians to rely on official updates from the Federal Ministry of Health and the NCDC.
The organisation said suspected cases and related concerns could be reported through the NCDC toll-free line, 6232, while its enrollees could contact SUNU Health on 020-1330-2870 for health-related enquiries or visit an accredited healthcare provider within its network.
The firm called for collective responsibility, vigilance and compliance with public health recommendations to protect communities and support efforts to prevent the spread of Ebola in Nigeria.
