Tributes have continued to pour in for the late Dr. Christopher Kolade, a revered statesman, broadcaster, diplomat, and corporate leader, following his passing at 92. President Bola Tinubu led the nation in mourning, describing him as “an icon of integrity, patriotism, and excellence” whose life embodied the highest ideals of leadership and service to Nigeria.
In a heartfelt statement personally signed by him, President Tinubu said he received the news of Kolade’s death “with profound sadness,” noting that the former envoy was “one of Nigeria’s intellectual treasures and a custodian of our enterprise history.”
“Dr. Kolade was among the finest of men. He was exceptionally brilliant, statesmanly, diligent, and had unimpeachable integrity,” the President said. “He was not only a boardroom icon, serving as Chief Executive and later Chairman of Cadbury Nigeria Plc, but also a patriot and an uncompromising advocate of transparency and accountability in governance.”
The President noted that Kolade’s career, spanning Nigeria’s transition from colonial rule to modern democracy—reflected a lifetime of dedicated service and moral uprightness.
From his early years as a colonial education officer to his tenure as Director-General of the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation, Kolade distinguished himself as a man driven by excellence and a deep sense of purpose.
He later served as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, representing the country with grace and dignity, and earning respect within international diplomatic circles.
Beyond his professional achievements, Tinubu praised Kolade’s humanitarian efforts through the Christopher Kolade Foundation, particularly his work in promoting ethical leadership and supporting individuals living with sickle-cell disease.
“Dr. Kolade lived not for wealth or fame but for impact,” Tinubu said. “His passing is agonising but worth celebrating. He immortalised himself through uncommon service to our nation and humanity.”
Kolade was widely regarded as one of the moral beacons of Nigeria’s corporate and public life, known for his humility, integrity, and principled leadership in both private and public institutions.
The President added that Kolade’s legacy would continue to inspire future generations of Nigerians committed to building a just, ethical, and progressive society.
“He was a true Nigerian—selfless, resilient, and guided by faith,” Tinubu said. “May God Almighty, whom he served faithfully, grant him eternal rest.”
