The official spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, Ayobami Oyalowo, has dismissed claims that President Bola Tinubu has used and abandoned the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
Speaking in an interview, Oyalowo said Tinubu remained satisfied with Wike’s contributions to his political efforts, particularly in Rivers State, rejecting suggestions that the relationship between the President and the former Rivers State governor was a “use and dump” arrangement.
Oyalowo noted that Wike had publicly stated that he was not a member of the APC, but maintained that the minister’s primary political objective was the re-election of President Tinubu.
He also defended Wike’s administration of the FCT, arguing that the territory operates outside the Treasury Single Account (TSA) arrangement to enable the minister to execute the responsibilities assigned to him.
According to Oyalowo, some APC governors may have misunderstood Wike’s political position by treating him as though he were a member of the ruling party.
He advised the governors to focus on their respective states, particularly on delivering good governance, maintaining public support and strengthening the APC ahead of future elections.
Oyalowo said Wike’s political responsibilities were primarily centred on the FCT and Rivers State, while APC governors should concentrate on organising and consolidating the party in their individual states.
He also called on political actors to resolve disagreements through dialogue, arguing that confrontation with Wike would not advance the party’s interests if his political activities were contributing to Tinubu’s re-election efforts.
Oyalowo’s comments come amid ongoing political discussions within the APC over Wike’s relationship with the ruling party and his role in the President’s political coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
