The Federal Government’s 30-day petrol price intervention, opposition parties’ preparations for the 2027 elections and growing concerns over electoral credibility have intensified political debate ahead of the next general elections.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited is expected to sell petrol at cost for 30 days by foregoing its retail profit margin, a move the Federal Government says is intended to ease the economic burden on Nigerians.

However, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has questioned the sustainability and timing of the intervention, raising concerns about its implications as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 elections.

The measure comes amid widespread complaints over the cost of living, with Nigerians continuing to grapple with high transport fares, food prices and other essential expenses.

Although the government insists the intervention is not a return to fuel subsidy, questions remain over whether the temporary relief will translate into lower transport costs and reduced prices of goods before the 30-day period expires.

Meanwhile, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is stepping up its preparations for the 2027 elections with plans to inaugurate the Atiku Abubakar–Rotimi Amaechi Presidential Campaign Council in Abuja.

The move signals the party’s attempt to strengthen its campaign machinery and position itself as a major challenger to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

However, the ADC faces the challenge of translating growing dissatisfaction with the government into votes through effective grassroots mobilisation, strong state structures and a united opposition front.

The party’s electoral ambitions also come amid continuing discussions about opposition cooperation, with disagreements over leadership and candidate selection posing potential obstacles to a broader alliance.

Another emerging battleground is the management of election results, following the ADC’s insistence that political parties should independently collate and publish polling-unit results during the 2027 elections.

While the party argues that independent result monitoring would promote transparency, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) retains the legal authority to declare official election results and winners.

The disagreement has renewed concerns over the credibility of the electoral process, particularly the possibility that competing or unverified figures could create confusion after voting.

INEC’s enforcement of statutory requirements for party membership registers has also raised concerns over the possible disqualification of candidates who fail to meet the prescribed conditions.

Meanwhile, a September 2026 survey by Yiaga Africa has highlighted the gap between Nigerians’ willingness to participate in the elections and their confidence in the electoral process.

The National Voting Intentions Survey 3.0 found that 84 per cent of respondents were likely or very likely to vote, while 41 per cent were likely to vote and certain of their preferred candidates.

Only 34 per cent expressed confidence that INEC would conduct credible elections.

The findings also indicated weaker voting intentions among younger Nigerians compared with older respondents, presenting a challenge to parties seeking to convert online political engagement into actual votes.

At the state level, reported internal disagreements within the APC in Ondo State over candidate selection and alleged anti-party activities have exposed potential divisions within the ruling party.

In Nasarawa State, a police request for opposition groups to reschedule their activities because of the First Lady’s visit and an APC rally has triggered questions about equal access to political space, despite security concerns cited by the authorities.

Security is also expected to remain a major issue ahead of the elections, following reports that 20 abducted prospective National Youth Service Corps members had returned to their families.

The circumstances surrounding their release, including allegations of ransom payments, have raised questions about security management and official communication.

At the same time, renewed moves towards state policing have intensified debate over whether decentralised security arrangements would improve public safety or expose policing institutions to political interference.

With the 2027 elections approaching, the Tinubu administration faces mounting pressure to demonstrate
