The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is under intense scrutiny after its online result checker portal went offline Wednesday evening, fuelling public frustration over the recently released 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.
However, in a statement issued via its official X handle, @waecnigeria, WAEC blamed the temporary shutdown on “technical issues,” assuring the public that efforts were underway to restore access within 24 hours.
“WAEC hereby informs the general public that the result checker portal @waecdirect.org is temporarily shut down due to technical issues,” the post read. “However, the Council is working assiduously to ensure that candidates are able to access their results in the next 24 hours. We apologise for any inconvenience this might have caused you.”
The timing of the shutdown has added fuel to widespread dissatisfaction, particularly over the dismal performance in English Language, which many parents, educators, and candidates have decried as a national embarrassment.
