Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has challenged the Executive Director of the Presidential Fiscal and Investment Policy Coordination (PFIPC), Adeniyi Adeyemi, to substantiate his allegations against President Bola Tinubu’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, instead of allegedly evading scrutiny.
Speaking during a media chat, Wike said senior government officials, particularly chiefs of staff, secretaries to the government and those overseeing public finances, are often targeted by individuals seeking to discredit an administration.
He argued that if Adeyemi’s allegations were credible, he should present his evidence directly to the appropriate security agencies rather than disappear from public view.
“If it was indeed correct, eyeball to eyeball, go to the security. He cannot just say this,”
Wike said, adding that the Chief of Staff’s phone records and communications with Adeyemi could be examined as part of any investigation.
The FCT minister also recounted what he described as a separate attempt to blackmail his family. According to Wike, unnamed individuals falsely alleged that his son facilitated a payment involving government land in an effort to tarnish his reputation.
He said his Chief Security Officer moved to have the accuser arrested after the allegation surfaced, maintaining that the timeline presented did not match his son’s actual travel records on the date in question.
Wike further disclosed that he rejected suggestions to quietly settle the matter, insisting that allegations of blackmail should be investigated rather than resolved privately.
“Why not settle? Settle what? This is blackmail. I would not allow that. I wouldn’t do it,” he said.
The minister also dismissed claims that Adeyemi is in hiding out of fear for his safety.
“Which life? Is your life bigger than the lives of other people in the country?”
Wike asked, arguing that allegations against public officials should be thoroughly investigated rather than used as the basis for calls to remove them from office.
The allegations referenced by Wike have not been independently verified, and the relevant authorities have not publicly announced the outcome of any investigation into the claims.
I know the chief of staff very, very well. He did not. People are saying the chief of staff must be sacked. By whom? The opposition? Why not form a government, and then you can sack whoever you want to sack.
