Twenty prospective National Youth Service Corps members abducted while travelling from Oyo State to their orientation camps in Abia State have regained their freedom after seven days in captivity.
The victims were reportedly kidnapped along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in Umunoha, Imo State, while travelling to their respective orientation camps.
Following their release, the victims were taken to the Department of State Services Hospital in Owerri, where they are currently receiving medical attention.
The Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier-General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, visited the victims at the facility on Wednesday to assess their condition and offer support.
He was accompanied by the Imo State Commissioner of Police, the Director of the Department of State Services and the Commander of the 34 Artillery Brigade, Imo State.
Nafiu also addressed the rescued prospective corps members during the visit.
The Managing Director of Uko Akwa Ibom Motors Nigeria Limited, Isiah Akpan, confirmed the release to The PUNCH on Wednesday.
Authorities have yet to disclose details of the rescue operation, including whether security agencies arrested any of the abductors or whether ransom was paid to secure the victims’ release.
