A house of Assembly hopeful,Hon. Saliu Sarafadeen Ayinde has led hundreds of members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Irepo Local Government Area.
The defection, which took place during the PDP’s general meeting, marked a significant boost for the ruling party in the state as it consolidates its grassroots strength ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at the event, Hon. Ayinde said the mass movement into the PDP was part of his ongoing engagement and familiarisation tour of his constituency. He pledged to transform the area through inclusive politics and community-driven development.
“This movement signifies the people’s trust in our vision to bring real change to Irepo,” he said, adding that his mission was to solidify the PDP’s hold across the constituency while ensuring that governance reflects the needs of ordinary citizens.
The ceremony drew a large crowd of party loyalists, community leaders, and residents who came to witness what many described as a political homecoming.
Among the defectors were several influential groups and individuals from various wards, including residents of Sooro, Ayekale, Hausa youths from Karaa, and commercial motorcycle riders. Notable figures such as Alhaji Muta Baba Onilu and his supporters (Ward 04), Nah Star and Tigana’s group (Wards 09 and 04), and Mrs. Nusirat Ayewo’s group (Ward 09) formally declared for the PDP. Others included the Kishi Democracy Empathy movement led by Mr. Jamiu Muritala and several community-based assemblies.
Welcoming the new members, the newly elected PDP chairman in Irepo, Kazeem Adekunle Olawoyin, described the defection as proof of the party’s growing influence and deep connection with the grassroots.
“This is not just a political event — it’s a sign that the PDP remains the people’s choice,” Olawoyin said. “Our doors are open to everyone who believes in unity, progress, and the betterment of Oyo State.”
