The Lagos State Government says the Red Line rail project will significantly boost mass transit capacity, with the ability to move up to 500,000 passengers daily when fully operational.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu disclosed this today while speaking with journalists on the sidelines of the 159th meeting of the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) held in Lagos.

The meeting brought together officials of the Nigerian Revenue Service, chairmen of the 36 state internal revenue services, and representatives of the Federal Capital Territory, for policy discussions and knowledge sharing.

On transportation, Sanwo-Olu said Lagos had completed the signing-off process for the Red Line rolling stock during a recent official visit abroad, adding that the rail system would represent a major upgrade over the Blue Line.

According to him, while the Blue Line operates four-car trains, the Red Line will run eight-car trains and transport up to 500,000 passengers daily along the Agbado–Oyingbo corridor at full capacity.

He also noted that discussions were ongoing to extend the rail line into neighbouring Ogun State to ease commuter movement.

The governor said the Red Line project forms part of a broader multi-modal transport strategy aimed at integrating rail, road, and water transport systems across the state.

He added that ongoing developments in the waterways sector, including the Omi Eko project, would introduce high-capacity electric boats to improve water transport.

By next year, he said residents would begin to see increased activity on the waterways as part of efforts to improve mobility, productivity, and revenue generation in the state.
