The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has instructed telecommunications companies to compensate subscribers with airtime credits following widespread service disruptions across the country.
The directive was disclosed by the Commission’s Executive Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Aminu Maida, during a media engagement in Lagos.
Maida explained that the move became necessary after regulators confirmed that several operators failed to meet the prescribed minimum quality of service benchmarks in different locations nationwide.
He clarified that the compensation is not a refund from the regulator but a mandatory obligation for service providers whose networks underperformed.
The NCC boss noted that the directive covers verified service failures recorded between November 2025 and January 2026.
Under the arrangement, affected subscribers are expected to receive airtime credits, along with notifications explaining the nature of the disruption and the value of the compensation.
Maida added that the Commission will independently monitor compliance to ensure that all eligible customers are credited, warning that any operator that fails to implement the directive risks facing regulatory sanctions.
