The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) has agreed to suspend its ongoing indefinite strike, which began on April 30.

The decision followed a meeting with the Federal Government’s Expanded Renegotiation Committee on Tuesday, where both parties reached agreements on key demands and progress in the renegotiation of conditions of service.

SSANU and NASU had embarked on the strike after the expiration of a 30-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government to conclude renegotiation talks. The unions had earlier rejected a government offer of a 30 percent salary increase, describing it as inadequate and not reflective of a proper collective bargaining agreement.

Following Tuesday’s meeting, JAC directed branch chairmen to suspend the strike with effect from Monday, May 11, 2026.

In a circular titled “Update on Strike Action,” signed by JAC Chairman and SSANU President, Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, and NASU General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi, the unions said the decision followed “exhaustive deliberations” with the government team led by the Chairman of the FGN Expanded Renegotiation Committee, Alhaji Yayale Ahmed.

The circular noted that the committee would seek the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for further review of the government’s earlier offer.

Branch leaders were directed to convene congresses to brief members on the development and formally suspend the strike while further engagements continue with relevant stakeholders.

The unions also expressed appreciation to members for what they described as total compliance with the strike action.

However, sources within the JAC leadership indicated that the strike could be resumed if the Federal Government fails to conclude the renegotiation process within two weeks.
