A fire outbreak on Wednesday caused panic within the National Assembly complex after flames were reported in the Senate wing of the legislature.

The incident occurred at Hearing Room 107, shortly after the Senate Committee on the Niger Delta Development Commission concluded the screening of Dr. Zainab Marwa, who was nominated to represent the North-East on the board of the commission.

Witnesses said National Assembly staff quickly responded to the emergency and used fire extinguishers to contain the blaze before it could spread to other parts of the building.

Video footage circulating online showed officials battling the flames as concerned workers and visitors looked on.

As of the time of filing this report, no injuries or fatalities had been recorded from the incident.

Preliminary reports suggest the fire may have originated from a microwave oven that was allegedly left switched on in a kitchen area within the facility.

However, authorities are yet to officially confirm the cause of the outbreak.

Sources within the National Assembly also disclosed that journalists covering proceedings at the complex were reportedly instructed by committee officials to delete photographs and video recordings taken during the incident.

The fire outbreak briefly disrupted activities in the area but was successfully brought under control by emergency responders.

Further details are expected as investigations into the cause of the incident continue.
