The Lagos State Government has warned residents to brace for heavy rainfall, rising water levels, riverbank overflows and possible flash floods in several parts of the state between June 14 and June 21, 2026.
The warning was issued by the Permanent Secretary, Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources, Mahamood Adegbite, following a flood prediction update released by the Federal Ministry of Environment.
According to the advisory, communities in Apapa, Badagry, Epe and Eti-Osa are among the areas likely to be affected by the anticipated weather conditions.
Other locations listed in the flood prediction update include Ikeja, Ikorodu, Ikoyi, Lagos Island, Lekki, Ojo, Orile-Agege, Surulere, Agege, Alimosho and Kosofe.
Adegbite said the forecast indicates a heightened risk of flash flooding, rising water levels and riverbank overflows in the affected areas, urging residents to remain vigilant throughout the period.
He advised communities within the identified locations to maintain an immediate flood watch, identify safe evacuation routes and take necessary precautions to protect vulnerable residents, especially children, the elderly and persons living in flood-prone areas.
The Permanent Secretary also urged residents to clear drainage channels around their homes and business premises to allow the free flow of stormwater and reduce the risk of flooding.
The state government reiterated its commitment to mitigating the impact of flooding through continuous drainage maintenance and emergency response measures, while calling on residents to cooperate with relevant authorities and heed safety advisories.
Residents were further encouraged to stay updated on weather forecasts and promptly report flooding incidents or blocked drainage channels to the appropriate government agencies.
The warning comes as Lagos continues to experience increased rainfall associated with the peak of the rainy season, a period often characterised by flooding in low-lying and coastal communities across the state.
