The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned residents of Lagos and other coastal states to prepare for a heightened risk of flash flooding following forecasts of sustained rainfall across southern Nigeria.
The warning was contained in the agency’s Tuesday Weather Outlook for June 30, 2026, which predicted widespread thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across the southern region throughout the day.
According to NiMet, continuous rainfall could trigger flash flooding in coastal and low-lying communities, particularly in Lagos and other states along Nigeria’s southern coastline.
The weather agency forecast thunderstorms accompanied by light rainfall during the morning over parts of Ondo, Ogun, Edo, Lagos, Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom states.
NiMet added that rainfall is expected to intensify later in the day, with moderate rainfall likely across the entire southern region during the afternoon and evening hours.
The forecast also highlighted expected weather conditions across the northern and North Central regions, while urging residents and relevant sectors to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
As part of its advisory, NiMet warned residents against driving or walking through floodwaters and cautioned people to avoid taking shelter under tall trees during thunderstorms due to the risk of lightning strikes.
The agency also advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports to support safe and efficient flight operations.
NiMet said strict adherence to these safety measures would help reduce the risks associated with severe weather conditions as the rainy weather persists across parts of the country.
