The Ogun State Government has reassured residents and road users of ongoing efforts to resolve the situation, after floods took over the recently commissioned Iperu–Ilishan Road corridor.
The state Commissioner for Works, Ade Akinsanya said preliminary assessments revealed that the flood occurred largely because a shop was situated below the current road level.
According to him, a heap of laterite, remnants from earlier construction works, also clogged sections of the drainage channel along the corridor.
This obstruction significantly impeded the discharge of stormwater and contributed to the flooding experienced. It is also important to note that the intensity of the rainfall at the time was unusually high, which increased stormwater volume.
Akinsanya said labourers have already been deployed and are currently clearing and packing the accumulated sand and laterite from the drainage paths, pending the arrival of a grader and other heavy-duty equipment.
He also urged residents to refrain from indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainage channels, as this significantly affects their functionality.
