Chelsea have confirmed the signing of England international Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa in a British record transfer worth £117 million.
The 24-year-old midfielder completed his medical in London after returning from the United States, where he represented England at the FIFA World Cup. He has signed a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with the club retaining the option to extend the deal by an additional year.
Speaking after the announcement, Rogers expressed his excitement about the move, describing Chelsea as the ideal destination for the next phase of his career.
“I’m joining the biggest club in London,” he said. “The direction the club is taking and its ambitions are exactly what I want to be part of. It feels like the perfect move for me, and I can’t wait to get started.”
The transfer comes as one of the biggest surprises of the summer window. Although Aston Villa had placed a premium valuation on Rogers, many observers expected Arsenal to lead the race for his signature.
Instead, Chelsea moved decisively after England’s World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina, having reportedly monitored Rogers for more than two years and identified him as their priority attacking target.
Club officials, including sporting directors, head coach Xabi Alonso and co-owner Behdad Eghbali, are said to have played key roles in completing the deal. Chelsea captain Reece James reportedly spoke to Rogers while both were with the England squad, while close friend and Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer was also aware of the club’s pursuit.
Negotiations progressed rapidly, with the agreement finalized in less than 48 hours. The transfer was aided by the strong relationship between Chelsea co-owner Behdad Eghbali and Aston Villa owner Nassef Sawiris.
The deal was concluded on Saturday, shortly before Rogers featured for England in their World Cup third-place playoff victory over France.
