The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced three suspects connected to the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State to life imprisonment. The judgment marks a significant development in the prosecution of individuals linked to the high-profile school kidnapping incident.
Delivering the ruling, Justice Salim Ibrahim ordered that the life sentences should take effect from the date the convicts were arrested. The court reached its decision after the three defendants pleaded guilty to the charges brought against them during the trial.
Before sentencing, counsel for the defendants appealed for leniency, describing the convicts as first-time offenders who had shown remorse by admitting their guilt. The lawyer argued that the offences for which they were convicted were not directly related to carrying out the kidnapping itself. He further urged the court to consider their family responsibilities, noting that they were married with children and also had elderly parents who depended on them for support. The defence appealed to the judge to give them a second chance by imposing a lighter sentence.
The prosecution, however, opposed the request for a reduced sentence, insisting that the convicts knowingly concealed information about those involved in the criminal operation instead of reporting it to security agencies. According to the prosecution, their actions contributed to the crime and warranted severe punishment. After considering the submissions of both parties, Justice Ibrahim sentenced the three defendants to life imprisonment, reaffirming the court’s commitment to ensuring accountability in kidnapping-related cases.
