The Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd), has called for stronger collaboration between the military and the media, describing responsible journalism as a key component in addressing Nigeria’s growing security challenges, particularly the threat of asymmetric warfare. He said accurate and timely reporting is essential to keeping Nigerians well-informed while supporting national security efforts.
Musa made the remarks while receiving the executive members of the Defence Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DECAN) during a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Defence in Abuja. He stressed that the military relies on the media to provide credible information to the public and pledged to maintain an open-door policy that would strengthen the relationship between the ministry and defence correspondents.
According to the minister, the Ministry of Defence will carefully review proposals presented by DECAN and implement those that are practical. He also urged defence correspondents to remain fair, balanced and professional in their reportage, noting that responsible journalism plays a vital role in building public trust and supporting the nation’s security architecture.
Speaking during the visit, DECAN President, Odita Sunday, congratulated Musa on his appointment as Minister of Defence, describing it as a reflection of his professionalism, competence and years of dedicated service to Nigeria. He announced that the association would confer on the minister the title of Grand Patron of DECAN during its Conference and Awards scheduled for October 2026. He also disclosed that the association would officially launch its quarterly publication, Defence Correspondents, at the event.
Odita reaffirmed the association’s commitment to ethical and responsible journalism while commending the Armed Forces of Nigeria for their sacrifices in combating terrorism, banditry and other security threats. He appealed for more regular engagements between the Ministry of Defence and defence correspondents, saying closer cooperation would enhance public confidence in the military, promote patriotism and ensure Nigerians receive credible, accurate and timely information on defence and national security matters.
