Lagos State is set to host what is expected to be the largest single gathering of traditional worshippers in the world on Thursday, August 20, 2026, as more than three million residents join celebrations marking this year’s Ìṣẹ̀ṣe Day.

To enable residents and visitors to participate fully in the celebration, the Lagos State Government has declared the day work-free for public servants, political appointees and other eligible workers.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Hon. Idris Aregbe, described Ìṣẹ̀ṣe Day as more than a public holiday, saying it represents a living expression of Yoruba traditions, spirituality and cultural identity.

Aregbe noted that the Yoruba people, estimated at over 55 million globally, have continued to preserve their cultural heritage across Africa and in communities in Cuba, Brazil and the Caribbean. He said the celebration in Lagos reflects the global influence and enduring legacy of Yoruba culture and traditional practices.

Ìṣẹ̀ṣe Day marks the culmination of a week-long programme of traditional activities and has been observed as a work-free day in Lagos since 2023, following a request by the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has sustained the annual observance as part of the state government’s commitment to promoting indigenous values, cultural heritage and religious inclusiveness.

Aregbe commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for supporting the preservation of traditional heritage and also paid tribute to the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu I, traditional rulers, White Cap Chiefs, Babaláwo, Ìyánífá, Olóòrìṣà and other custodians of Yoruba traditions for their roles in preserving the culture.

This year’s celebration will feature prayers, traditional rituals, processions, drumming and other cultural displays dedicated to the Òrìṣà. The activities will be coordinated by the Association of African Traditional Religion Nigeria and Overseas (AATREN).

Aregbe urged participants to celebrate peacefully and respectfully, stressing that Ìṣẹ̀ṣe Day provides an opportunity to showcase Lagos as a city that embraces its diverse cultural and religious heritage.
