Basketball is gradually gaining popularity among young people in Ibadan, with more youths taking up the sport and developing a growing interest in the game.
Some young basketball enthusiasts who spoke with IFEOLUWA ADEGOKE of Adamimogo 105.1 FM at a basketball court in Ibadan said the sport helps them stay physically fit, active and healthy while also promoting teamwork and discipline.
For Adegoke Semilore, basketball is not only about playing but also about watching games and regularly practising to improve her skills.
Another enthusiast, Onipede Marvelous, described basketball as entertaining and a good way to remain active. She also enjoys watching games and learning new techniques from other players.
However, players identified inadequate sporting facilities and limited financial support as major challenges affecting the growth of basketball in Ibadan.
Adewumi Abisola lamented the poor condition of some basketball courts and equipment, noting that the lack of quality facilities could discourage young players and limit their development.
Meanwhile, Inkipi Victoria called for more basketball competitions in schools and communities, saying such programmes would help identify and nurture young talents.
She also urged stakeholders to leverage social media to promote the sport and showcase talented players to a wider audience.
Victoria encouraged young basketball enthusiasts to remain focused, practise consistently and take advantage of every opportunity to develop their skills.
The players believe that improved facilities, greater sponsorship, regular competitions and increased media coverage could give basketball a stronger foothold in Ibadan and create more opportunities for young people across Nigeria.
