The Federal Government is set to commence a two-week repair work on the damaged expansion joints on the Kara Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway FROM September 8.
The Acting Controller, Federal Ministry of Works, Ogun State, Richard Adeleye, disclosed that the repair became necessary because the expansion joints had exceeded their service life and were posing risks to motorists using the busy highway.
He explained that the work would be carried out in phases to minimise its impact on traffic, with one half of the affected section initially closed while motorists use the other half under strict traffic control.
The controller said personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, among other agencies, would be deployed to manage traffic throughout the exercise.
He warned that failure to replace damaged expansion joints could lead to serious structural problems, including buckling and cracking of the bridge.
The controller appealed to road users to exercise patience during the construction, noting that the damaged expansion joint had contributed to accidents along the section.
