President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to deliver a Joint Address to the National Assembly on Friday, June 12, 2026, as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day celebration.
The announcement was made by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) during the inauguration of the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) responsible for coordinating the national commemoration.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held at the Shehu Shagari Complex in Abuja, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, stated that the President’s address would be one of the major highlights of the anniversary programme.
According to Akume, Democracy Day remains an important moment for Nigerians to reflect on the sacrifices made by individuals and groups who championed the country’s return to democratic governance.
He paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12, 1993 struggle, including the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, whose legacy continues to shape Nigeria’s democratic journey.
The SGF also noted that the annual celebration provides an opportunity for the Federal Government to showcase progress made in strengthening democratic institutions and promoting national development despite ongoing socio-economic challenges.
With preparations underway and less than two weeks to the anniversary, Akume urged members of the committee to begin implementation immediately, stressing that this year’s activities would reflect the government’s commitment to prudent spending and fiscal responsibility.
