The Lagos State Government has announced plans to introduce a state-owned driver’s licence in collaboration with the Federal Government as part of efforts to improve road safety, traffic regulation, and orderliness across the state.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this on Monday during the 2025 annual ministerial briefing marking the seventh year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office, held at Alausa, Ikeja.

According to him, the new Lagos driver’s licence scheme is expected to be launched within the next few weeks.

He explained that the initiative will be implemented jointly with the Federal Government and will give motorists the option of obtaining either the federal licence or the new state-issued version.

Osiyemi noted that the initiative is aimed at ensuring faster processing and reducing the delays often experienced under the current licensing system, while also strengthening safety and compliance on Lagos roads.

He added that the state expects the project to enhance efficiency in driver documentation and improve overall traffic management within the metropolis.

In a related development, Osiyemi also announced that the Federal Executive Council has approved funding for the first phase of the Lagos Green Line rail project, with construction scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2026.

The Green Line rail project is a 68-kilometre corridor that will connect Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone, passing through Victoria Island, Lekki, Ajah, and Sangotedo, before terminating at the Free Trade Zone. The line will feature 17 stations along the route.

He revealed that a Memorandum of Understanding has already been signed with China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) for the execution of the project, which forms part of Lagos State’s broader rail expansion plan.

Osiyemi also provided updates on the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Red Line, a 37-kilometre route running from Marina through Oyingbo to Agbado.

He said Phase One of the project is currently operational and has been expanded with the addition of 24 new coaches, configured into three sets of eight-coach trains, each capable of carrying over 500 passengers.

He further disclosed that feasibility studies are ongoing for Phase Two of the Red Line project, which will extend from Oyingbo to the National Theatre and connect with the Blue Line, further strengthening Lagos’ integrated rail network.
