Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has said the lasting legacy of his administration will be measured not only by infrastructure delivered across the state but also by the institutions strengthened and systems established to sustain good governance beyond his tenure.
Sanwo-Olu stated this in a goodwill message delivered on his behalf by the Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, at the Church Thanksgiving Service marking the commencement of the 2026/2027 Legal Year at the Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina, Lagos.
The Governor said the commencement of a new Legal Year provided an opportunity to reflect on the responsibility of public institutions to outlive those occupying public offices. He noted that as his administration entered the final phase of its tenure, greater attention should be given to what would endure beyond completed projects and infrastructure.
He said the strength of Lagos’ institutional legacy should be reflected in citizens’ confidence, effective systems and institutions capable of serving future generations. According to him, a strong justice system remains essential to protecting rights, resolving disputes fairly, enforcing contracts and ensuring equal access to justice.
Sanwo-Olu stressed that confidence in the judiciary was particularly important to Lagos because of its large population, vibrant economy and complex social environment, noting that an effective justice system has implications for investment, economic activity, public trust and the protection of citizens’ rights.
The Governor assured that the Lagos State Government would continue, within its constitutional responsibilities, to support initiatives aimed at improving access to justice and strengthening the administration of justice. He, however, said the sustainability of institutional reforms ultimately depended on the integrity, courage and fairness of those entrusted with their stewardship.
He urged judges and members of the legal profession to uphold independence, fairness, accountability, dignity and the rule of law, stressing that political administrations would change, but institutions of justice must remain strong and trusted.
Sanwo-Olu congratulated the Lagos legal community on the commencement of the 2026/2027 Legal Year and prayed for wisdom and courage for the judiciary, as well as continued peace, progress and prosperity for Lagos State and Nigeria.
The event was attended by judges and magistrates, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, members of the Bar and other distinguished guests.
