The Lagos State Government has announced plans to open three additional stations on the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line by the end of February 2027, expanding the rail network from five to eight operational stations.
The Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Engr. Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, disclosed this during the 2026 Media Parley organised by the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation in Lagos.
The new stations, FESTAC, Alakija and Trade Fair, are expected to extend rail services to more communities, particularly residents and commuters along the corridor, while providing an alternative to road transportation.
Akinajo said the expansion, planned for the first quarter of 2027, would improve access to mass transit, strengthen connectivity and support the state government’s efforts to develop an integrated and efficient public transportation system.
The Blue Line currently operates five stations: Marina, National Theatre, Iganmu, Alaba and Mile 2. The addition of the three stations will increase the network’s coverage and bring rail transportation closer to more Lagos residents.
Beyond the Blue Line expansion, the LAMATA managing director disclosed that construction of four Quality Bus Corridors (QBCs) was nearing completion, while work on the Marina and Mile 2 Interchange Hubs had recorded considerable progress.
The projects form part of Lagos State’s broader transport development strategy, which seeks to integrate rail services, bus corridors and interchange facilities to improve connections between different modes of transportation.
The government expects the expansion of the Blue Line, alongside progress on the bus corridors and interchange hubs, to improve commuter experiences, ease pressure on road transportation and enhance urban mobility across the state.
The planned opening of the three new stations by February 2027 marks another step in Lagos State’s drive to expand modern rail infrastructure and provide more residents with access to reliable public transportation.
