The governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has vowed to step down from the governorship race if the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government provides potable water for residents of Lagos Island.
Rhodes-Vivour made the statement in a video shared on social media, where he criticised the continued lack of essential public services in Lagos Island despite the area’s longstanding support for the ruling party.
According to him, Lagos Island has remained a stronghold of the ruling party since the return to democratic governance in 1999, supporting successive political platforms, including the Alliance for Democracy (AD), Action Congress (AC), Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and the APC.
He, however, lamented that residents continue to face challenges such as inadequate access to potable water, poor sanitation and waste management, unaffordable housing, and limited job opportunities for young people.
Rhodes-Vivour also said he had been inspired by young people who are determined to pursue a different political direction and demand greater accountability from those in government.
He noted that the residents deserve a government that does not take their support for granted but prioritises the delivery of essential public services and invests significantly in human capital development.
The ADC candidate’s remarks underscore his criticism of the gap between the political support enjoyed by the ruling party in Lagos Island and the provision of basic amenities to residents.
