A chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Peter Agubuzu, has faulted the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, over his comments on the South-East’s quest for the Nigerian presidency.
Kalu had said the Igbo people could not afford to wait 60 years to occupy the presidency for just four years, while reacting to calls for a single-term presidential arrangement for the region.
However, Agubuzu, in a reaction on Sunday, described the comments as misplaced, insisting that Nigerians are more concerned about economic hardship and the rising cost of living.
He argued that the immediate concern of citizens is economic survival, rather than the debate over how long the South-East would wait to produce a president.
The NDC chieftain maintained that the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is focused on transforming Nigeria from a consumption-driven economy to a production-based one, with the aim of reducing poverty and improving living conditions.
Agubuzu also said the debate over a single presidential term should be considered within the broader issues of national unity, equity and political inclusion.
