Lagos State pensioners have staged a warning protest over the delayed implementation of a pension increase they said had been approved but was yet to be effected by the Lagos State Pension Commission.

The protesters expressed concern that the delay could further worsen the financial difficulties faced by retirees amid rising living costs, particularly if the implementation extends beyond the tenure of the present administration.

According to the pensioners, they had expected the approved increase to be implemented without further delay, given the increasing cost of food, healthcare and other essential needs.

Pensioners Seek Government’s Urgent Intervention

The retirees called on the Lagos State Government, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu and his deputy, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, to intervene and ensure that the pension adjustment is implemented promptly.

The pensioners said many retirees who spent their active years serving the state were struggling to cope with current economic realities and could not afford further delays in the implementation of the increase.

Union Gives Government Final Warning

Speaking during the protest, the union’s secretary, Olagbaye Johnson, said the demonstration was intended to give the state government a final opportunity to resolve the matter before the retirees embark on a larger mobilisation.

Johnson urged the government to address the concerns of the pensioners and prevent the situation from escalating.

Lagos Government Defends Pension Record

The Lagos State Government, however, maintains that the welfare, health and overall wellbeing of retirees remain a priority of the administration.

The government said the state has recorded what it described as its most outstanding performance on pension matters in the history of Lagos, citing sustained and measurable improvements in the welfare of retired public servants under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).

The government’s position contrasts with the concerns raised by the protesting pensioners, who are demanding that the approved pension increase be implemented without further delay.

The development has therefore placed renewed attention on the welfare of Lagos retirees and the need for the government and pensioners’ representatives to reach a resolution on the implementation of the pension adjustment.
