The build-up ahead of the 2027 Lagos State governorship election took a dramatic turn on Tuesday as Dr. Samuel Mawuyon Ajose officially stepped down from the race and declared his full support for Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat.
Ajose, who had been considered one of the emerging contenders within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), announced his decision during a meeting with supporters and party stakeholders in Lagos.
According to him, the decision was reached after extensive consultations aimed at preserving party unity and ensuring continuity in governance and development across the state.
“I have decided to step aside from the governorship contest and fully support the aspiration of Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat,” Ajose said. “At this critical stage in Lagos politics, unity, stability, and continuity must remain our priority.”

He described Hamzat as a competent administrator with the experience and capacity needed to sustain the developmental agenda of the current administration.
Ajose also urged his supporters and political associates across the state to align with Hamzat’s ambition ahead of the APC primary process, stressing that the move was made in the overall interest of the party and Lagos residents.
The endorsement is expected to further strengthen Hamzat’s growing political momentum within the APC, where he has continued to receive backing from influential stakeholders and political blocs ahead of the 2027 governorship race.
Dr. Hamzat, who currently serves as Deputy Governor of Lagos State, is expected to emerge in the battle to succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the end of his tenure.
