The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has introduced a new Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) system that allows eligible Nigerians to register to vote online using their smartphones.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Lagos State, Prof. Ayobami Salami, announced the development, saying the new system is designed to make voter registration more accessible and convenient.
According to Salami, prospective voters no longer need to visit INEC offices for biometric capture, as the new platform enables users to complete the registration process digitally.
“We have now introduced what is called the new Continuous Voter Registration online. Now you don’t need to come to our office for capturing. Go to our website, download the new CVR app, and do everything, including biometric capturing, on your smartphone,” he said.
The initiative is expected to reduce congestion at INEC registration centres and simplify the voter registration process, particularly for first-time voters and those seeking to update their registration details.
INEC said applicants are required to begin the registration process through the commission’s online CVR portal before completing biometric fingerprint capture using the official mobile application.
The commission expects the digital registration system to improve access to voter registration and encourage greater participation in Nigeria’s electoral process ahead of future elections.
