British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has told United States President Donald Trump that Iran must never have a nuclear weapon.
Burnham made the statement during a meeting with Trump on Tuesday on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
According to a statement issued by the British Prime Minister’s Office on Wednesday, the talks focused on Iran’s nuclear programme, the Strait of Hormuz, the war in Ukraine, trade, migration, Diego Garcia, the Falkland Islands and the case of British citizen Jimmy Lai.
Burnham stressed the need to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, while the two leaders discussed efforts to reopen global shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
They also discussed the war in Ukraine and the need for a lasting peace, with Trump acknowledging Britain’s support for Ukraine since the conflict began.
On the Falkland Islands, Burnham reaffirmed Britain’s position, saying the country would stand firm in the face of threats.
The two leaders also discussed UK-US trade and migration, with Burnham highlighting a reported decline in small-boat crossings and net migration.
On Jimmy Lai, Burnham reiterated Britain’s demand for his immediate release.
The meeting also covered Diego Garcia, with Burnham saying he remained committed to working with all parties to find a solution.
