UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham is facing mounting criticism over comments he made about Manchester City following the club’s conviction for breaching Premier League financial regulations.

According to BBC Sport, several Premier League clubs have expressed concerns about Burnham’s remarks, with senior figures questioning whether they could create an impression of political interference in an independent disciplinary process.

Burnham told the BBC he would be “really concerned” if Manchester City’s owners decided to sell the club following the verdict. His comments reportedly surprised officials at rival clubs, who questioned why the Prime Minister had intervened in the matter.

Downing Street has since clarified that Burnham believes nobody should be “above the rules”. However, his remarks have continued to attract scrutiny, particularly because Manchester City has yet to have its appeal heard.

The club was found guilty by an independent commission following a 42-day hearing in 2024. A separate hearing to determine sanctions is still pending, while Manchester City has denied wrongdoing and is expected to challenge the verdict before an independent appeal board.

The controversy has also revived questions about Burnham’s previous relationship with Manchester City’s Abu Dhabi ownership during his tenure as Mayor of Greater Manchester.

Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has called for details of meetings between Burnham and senior figures associated with the club to be made public.

Some Premier League officials have described Burnham’s intervention as unusual. One senior figure reportedly called the comments “absolutely bizarre”, saying they were “at best naive and at worst quite manipulative”.

Another club official described the remarks as “clumsy”, while a third said it was surprising that the Prime Minister had “misspoken”.

Despite the concerns, another club source suggested that the scrutiny surrounding Burnham could itself make any attempt at political interference difficult.

The Premier League has maintained that its disciplinary process is independent, with Manchester City’s appeal and any eventual sanctions to be handled through the established procedures.
