Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the former running mate of Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election, has expressed doubts about the possibility of a successful political alliance between Obi and Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso.
Speaking at a recent press conference, Datti revealed that he had previously advised Obi to consider aligning with Kwankwaso ahead of the 2023 elections. However, he noted that Obi was reluctant at the time.
Datti argued that Kwankwaso possesses greater political experience and influence, making any arrangement where he serves as a vice-presidential candidate to Obi unlikely to succeed.
According to him, a politician of Kwankwaso’s stature would not accept a subordinate role, adding that such a partnership would be fundamentally flawed from the outset.
He further suggested that northern political interests would more likely support Kwankwaso as a presidential candidate, with Obi as his running mate.
Datti also questioned Obi’s political approach, stating that he may struggle in Nigeria’s highly competitive political landscape. He claimed that Obi tends to avoid confrontational politics and may find it challenging to assert himself when faced with strong opposition.
Meanwhile, Buba Galadima, a close associate of Kwankwaso, has offered a different perspective. In a recent interview, he disclosed that the New Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially zoned its presidential ticket to the South. Galadima emphasized that the decision is final and will not be altered for any individual.
He also noted that the party is expected to submit its list of members to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on May 5 or 6.
In a related development, both Obi and Kwankwaso recently exited the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing internal conflicts and irreconcilable differences within the party.
