The Delta State Police Command has arrested 22 suspects and rescued two minors during a coordinated intelligence-led operation targeting suspected illicit drug dens and criminal hideouts in Ozoro and Abraka communities. The raid forms part of the command’s intensified efforts to combat drug trafficking and other criminal activities across the state.
The operation, conducted on July 21, was led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Department of Operations following credible intelligence. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, officers raided identified drug hotspots in Ofagbe Community, Ozoro, as well as Ekrejeta and the NUT Area in Abraka. The exercise resulted in the arrest of 22 suspects, comprising 19 males and three females, for alleged offences related to the possession, sale and distribution of illicit drugs.
Edafe disclosed that operatives also rescued two minors who were found inside a suspected drug den allegedly operated by their father. He described the discovery as one of the major outcomes of the operation, raising concerns about the exposure of children to criminal and drug-related activities.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, described the presence of the minors in the suspected drug facility as deeply disturbing. He reaffirmed the command’s determination to dismantle drug trafficking networks, protect vulnerable members of society and sustain intelligence-driven operations aimed at ridding Delta State of illicit drug activities and other forms of crime. The commissioner also appealed to parents, guardians and community leaders to continue providing useful information to support law enforcement efforts.
The latest operation comes weeks after a similar crackdown in Yobe State, where police arrested 14 suspected drug dealers during raids on criminal hideouts in Jakusko Local Government Area and recovered more than 300 sachets and packages of suspected illicit substances, including Tramadol, Vega tablets and Indian hemp.
