Edo State Police Command have launched an investigation into a fatal shooting incident that occurred around the University of Benin axis in Benin City.
According to preliminary reports, three occupants of a Mercedes-Benz GLK were driving out of the University of Benin when they were suddenly intercepted by another unidentified white GLK vehicle at the main campus gate in Ugbowo.
The attackers reportedly lowered their windows and opened fire on the victims before fleeing the scene to an unknown destination.
The attack also left a female passerby, identified as Dorathy Ubah, with varying degrees of gunshot injuries.
Police operatives were quickly deployed to the scene following the distress report and evacuated the victims to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) for emergency treatment.
Medical personnel confirmed the death of Alexander Omogiate, while the remaining victims are currently receiving treatment and responding positively.
The Commissioner of Police in Edo State, CP Monday Agbonika, has ordered a full-scale investigation aimed at identifying and apprehending the fleeing suspects.
The command also issued a warning to criminal elements operating within the state, particularly around university communities, urging them to desist from violent crimes.
It reiterated its commitment to ensuring safety and maintaining law and order across Edo State, adding that no effort would be spared in bringing those responsible to justice.
The police further called on members of the public with useful information to assist ongoing investigations by reporting to the nearest police station or using designated emergency lines, assuring that all information will be treated with strict confidentiality.
