The Federal Government is considering a major change to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) deployment policy that could see prospective corps members posted to the regions where they studied.
Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, disclosed the proposal during an interview on Thursday, saying the move is intended to improve productivity while promoting national integration in response to the country’s evolving realities.

According to the minister, the proposed deployment policy would place corps members in environments they are already familiar with, a move the government believes could enhance safety, efficiency and service delivery.
Olawande also revealed that the ongoing restructuring of the NYSC will increasingly align corps members’ postings with their areas of specialization, allowing them to contribute more effectively to sectors relevant to their training and professional skills.
As part of the wider reforms, the minister confirmed that the scheme’s traditional khaki uniform will be replaced with adire fabric. He said the change is aimed at promoting local manufacturing and ensuring government spending supports Nigeria’s economy.
The proposed reforms form part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to modernise the NYSC scheme and make it more responsive to current national needs. No timeline has yet been announced for the implementation of the changes.
“Let’s go back to the era where people graduate from school, and companies come to their schools, and NYSC to pick them.”
