The Federal Government has suspended the planned reconstruction of the failed expansion joint on Kara Bridge (outbound Lagos) along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The Acting Federal Controller of Works in Ogun State, Richard Adeleye, said a new date for the project will be announced later.
The suspension follows an earlier announcement by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) that the two-week repair would begin on July 28, 2026. The project was expected to reduce the four-lane carriageway to two lanes over a 1.5-kilometre stretch, with motorists advised to expect traffic delays, work remotely where possible, and use alternative routes.
The repair was planned as a critical safety measure after a series of crashes linked to the bridge’s damaged expansion joints. The most recent accident on July 24 claimed one life and left several others injured in a multi-vehicle collision involving articulated trucks and a Toyota Sienna.
The Ministry of Works had previously begun replacing the bridge’s expansion joints in March, but the exercise was suspended after prolonged traffic gridlock along the corridor.
