The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Oyo State has called on political parties and other stakeholders to remain committed to democratic principles and peaceful participation as preparations intensify for future electoral activities in the state.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Dr. Rahman Adeniran Tella, made the appeal on Tuesday during a stakeholders’ meeting convened to review the recently concluded political party primaries and assess progress on the ongoing final phase of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.
Tella commended many political parties for their conduct during the primaries but noted that there were areas requiring improvement. He stressed that while INEC remained committed to ensuring credible elections, the commission could not be held responsible for lapses arising from the actions or inactions of political parties.
Providing updates on preparations for the 2027 general elections, the REC urged eligible residents who had yet to register as voters to take advantage of the third and final phase of the CVR exercise, which is expected to end on July 10.
Also speaking at the meeting, the Oyo State Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Ajolayo Akande, reaffirmed the agency’s collaboration with INEC in promoting voter education and ensuring hitch-free electoral processes in the state.
Representatives of political parties, led by the Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Oyo State, Opeyemi Akinade, commended INEC for its efforts and pledged continued cooperation to strengthen democracy in the state.
The meeting brought together electoral officials, political party representatives and other key stakeholders as part of efforts to foster dialogue and ensure adequate preparations ahead of the 2027 polls.
