The Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, has cleared street traders occupying road corridors and other unauthorised locations around Tafawa Balewa Square, TBS, and the Costain Under Bridge/National Theatre axis.
The enforcement operation was carried out in collaboration with officials of the Kick Against Indiscipline, (KAI), as part of efforts to promote environmental cleanliness and protect public spaces across Lagos.
According to LAWMA’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the exercise targeted street trading activities that obstruct pedestrian and free movement and contribute to environmental nuisance along the affected corridors.
Gbadegesin warned traders against occupying road corridors, walkways and other unauthorised locations, urging them to move their businesses to designated and approved trading areas.
He said maintaining clean and orderly public spaces requires sustained compliance from traders, residents and other stakeholders, adding that LAWMA would continue working with relevant government agencies to address activities that undermine environmental standards.
A follow up enforcement operation was also carried out at the affected locations to prevent traders from returning to the cleared areas. Officials reportedly cleared some traders attempting to reoccupy the road corridors and directed them to vacate the locations.
LAWMA said it would continue monitoring the TBS and Costain areas to prevent the return of unauthorised trading activities and ensure sustained compliance with environmental regulations.
The authority also urged residents and traders to support the enforcement efforts by complying with established regulations and avoiding activities that obstruct public spaces or contribute to environmental breakdown
