The Lagos State Government has commenced the installation of boundary demarcation signposts along the state’s borderlines to prevent encroachment, clarify boundary disputes and promote peaceful coexistence among neighboring communities and states.
The exercise, being implemented through the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development, is designed to address ambiguities surrounding boundary demarcations and prevent disputes arising from alleged encroachment.
Speaking at the commencement of the exercise, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mrs. Kikelomo Bolarinwa, said the state government remained committed to ensuring that boundaries between communities and neighboring states were clearly identified in accordance with the official specifications of the Office of the Surveyor-General.
Bolarinwa explained that the installation of the signposts was a practical measure to uphold officially recognised boundary lines and promote clarity in border communities.
She added that the initiative would help check encroachment from neighbouring states and ensure that residents of border communities were properly captured in government welfare programmes.
According to her, the exercise would also support the provision of essential infrastructure, stimulate local economic activities, improve living conditions and reduce rural-to-urban migration across the state.
The permanent secretary urged residents of border communities to protect the installed signposts and refrain from actions capable of causing boundary infractions or disrupting public peace.
She warned that anyone found vandalising or demolishing the signposts would face appropriate punishment, stressing that the government would not tolerate actions that undermine social order, peaceful coexistence and the ease of doing business in Lagos State.
Bolarinwa further assured residents that the state government would continue to extend the benefits of democracy to communities across Lagos through the implementation of its T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Development Agenda.
She particularly emphasised the inclusion of rural communities in the government’s development plans, reaffirming its commitment to building a 21st-century economy and achieving a Greater Lagos.
