The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has commenced a pre-festive cleaning operation in Ikoyi as part of efforts to strengthen environmental sanitation and prepare strategic areas of the state for increased activities during the festive period.
The exercise, which began with the cleaning of drainage channels along the Bourdillon, Alexander and Gerrard corridors, involves the removal of accumulated silt, waste and other materials obstructing the free flow of water.
The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the operation was part of the Authority’s wider plan to intensify sanitation activities across key locations in Lagos ahead of the festive season. He explained that materials removed from the drainage channels were being evacuated immediately to prevent wash-back and the creation of additional environmental problems.
According to him, the cleaning exercise is expected to improve drainage flow and enhance the general environmental condition of Ikoyi for residents, businesses and road users.
Gbadegesin disclosed that the operation would continue on other streets within Ikoyi before being extended to Victoria Island and other parts of the state under LAWMA’s broader pre-festive sanitation programme.
He urged residents, businesses and other stakeholders to keep drainage channels free of refuse, properly package their waste and ensure it is handed over to accredited Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators for proper disposal.
The LAWMA boss also appealed to residents and businesses to cooperate with sanitation personnel by granting access to areas requiring attention and avoiding activities that could hinder the cleaning operations.
Gbadegesin reaffirmed LAWMA’s commitment to sustaining strategic environmental sanitation across Lagos, urging residents and visitors to support government efforts by maintaining proper waste disposal practices for a cleaner, healthier and more liveable environment.
