The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has urged residents to report cases of illegal waste dumping across the state, stressing that public participation is critical to maintaining a cleaner and healthier environment.
In a public advisory issued on Friday through its official X account, the authority warned that indiscriminate waste disposal poses serious environmental and public health risks, including blocked drainage channels, flooding during rainfall and the spread of diseases.
LAWMA encouraged residents who witness illegal dumping to report such incidents through its designated channels, providing accurate location details and other relevant information to enable a prompt response.
Residents can report violations through the authority’s toll-free lines, 08000052962, also available as 080000LAWMA, and 07080601020.
The agency advised callers to provide the location and time of the incident, alongside supporting evidence such as photographs or descriptions of vehicles allegedly used to dump waste illegally.
According to LAWMA, public reports play an important role in identifying illegal dumping hotspots, facilitating enforcement operations and ensuring that environmental offenders are held accountable.
The appeal comes amid ongoing efforts to curb improper waste disposal across Lagos. The authority’s 2025 Waste Surveillance Statistics recorded 1,023 cases of illegal dumping and waste management non-compliance during the year, with 447 cases referred for legal action.
The report also identified midnight and the early morning hours as peak periods for illegal dumping, while residential refuse, construction debris and hazardous waste were among the materials frequently discarded unlawfully.
LAWMA’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, has repeatedly called on residents to patronise registered Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators for waste collection and desist from dumping refuse in drainage channels, road medians and open spaces.
The authority also urged residents to contribute to environmental sanitation by adopting responsible waste disposal practices and cooperating with enforcement officers.
For complaints and service-related enquiries, residents can contact LAWMA through its official email address, info@lawma.gov.ng, or its verified social media platforms.
The agency reaffirmed that sustained public cooperation and responsible waste management practices remain essential to reducing environmental pollution, preventing flooding and improving sanitation across Lagos.
