The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) will host a two-day technical workshop on sewage treatment operations to strengthen the capacity of sewage treatment plant operators and improve wastewater management across the state.
The maiden workshop, themed “Effective Operation of Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs),” is being organised in partnership with the Nigerian Institution of Environmental Engineers (NIEE). It is scheduled to hold from September 2 to 3, 2026.
Speaking on the programme, the General Manager of LSWMO, Engr. Adefemi Afolabi, said the initiative forms part of the Lagos State Government’s strategic efforts to promote safe, efficient and environmentally compliant wastewater management, particularly in residential and commercial facilities.
Afolabi noted that effective wastewater management goes beyond infrastructure and regulation, stressing that the competence of professionals operating treatment facilities is crucial to achieving safe, efficient and sustainable environmental outcomes.
He said participants would receive practical training in sewage treatment plant operations and maintenance, wastewater treatment processes, laboratory analysis, effluent parameter determination, wastewater microbiology and plant optimisation.
The workshop will also focus on energy efficiency, safe sanitation, wastewater reuse and recycling, as well as the principles of a circular economy. It will provide a platform for practitioners to share experiences, identify operational challenges and explore practical solutions to improve wastewater treatment and regulatory compliance.
According to Afolabi, the initiative reflects LSWMO’s commitment to building a technically competent, compliance-driven and sustainability-focused wastewater management system capable of supporting Lagos State’s growing population while protecting its environmental resources.
The training is expected to attract sewage treatment plant operators, maintenance officers, plant supervisors, engineers, environmental consultants, quality assurance officers, HSE professionals and facilities managers for knowledge-sharing and practical engagement on wastewater management challenges.
