Nigerian actor and social commentator Adebowale Adedayo, popularly known as Mr Macaroni, has explained his decision to reduce his public criticism of government, citing fatigue from repeating the same messages, backlash from citizens and threats he faced over his activism.
Mr Macaroni made the clarification in a series of posts on X on Wednesday while reacting to an earlier interview shared by Wazobia FM. He noted that the interview was recorded more than two years ago but said the issues he raised remained relevant.
The actor said he had repeatedly spoken about issues affecting Nigerians but became tired of making the same arguments without seeing what he considered sufficient public action. He also recalled the threats and backlash he faced following his activism during the #EndSARS protests.
Mr Macaroni said his decision to take a break followed a March 2026 statement in which he criticised the administration of President Bola Tinubu. He maintained that he had been “persecuted and vilified” for speaking against government and that threats had become a recurring experience.
He also expressed concern about what he described as a “survival mentality” among Nigerians, arguing that citizens should seek an environment that enables people to thrive rather than remain focused solely on survival.
Reflecting on his activism, Mr Macaroni recalled receiving threats during the #EndSARS protests, saying the situation caused concern within his family, with his mother repeatedly urging him to be cautious. He said he nevertheless continued to speak publicly on national issues.
The actor also recalled his involvement in the 2023 general election, when he encouraged Nigerians to vote wisely and publicly stated the candidate he intended to support. He stressed that he did not direct others to vote for the same candidate.
According to him, his political position attracted insults and abuse from some Nigerians, while the eventual outcome of the election further contributed to his decision to reduce his political commentary.
Mr Macaroni said he is not interested in joining politics and intends to use his current break to redefine himself and focus on his art, which he described as something he loves deeply alongside Nigeria.
He added that he would be ready to speak out again when he believes Nigerians are prepared to demand greater accountability and take action on issues affecting the country.
