A delegation from the Secretariat of the National Economic Council (NEC) has inspected the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Red Line, commending the Lagos State Government for its investments in integrated transportation infrastructure.
The delegation, led by the Ondo State Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Hon. Laolu Akindolire, visited the project as part of efforts to monitor the implementation of NEC resolutions and assess development initiatives across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The inspection was aimed at evaluating projects with significant socio-economic impact and determining their contribution to improving the wellbeing of citizens.
Briefing the delegation, the Technical Adviser, Planning, at the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Engr. Osa Konyeha, who represented the Managing Director, Engr. Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, said the state’s transport development was guided by the Lagos State Strategic Transport Master Plan.
He explained that the master plan provides for the development of six rail lines, one monorail system, 14 Bus Rapid Transit corridors, more than 20 water transportation routes and complementary road infrastructure to create an efficient and competitive multimodal transport system.
Konyeha disclosed that the Lagos State Government was working towards connecting the Red Line with the Blue Line at the National Theatre Station to improve seamless movement and connectivity across the rail network.
He added that construction of the Green Line would soon commence, while plans were also underway for the development of the Purple Line as part of the state’s long-term strategy to expand public transportation and provide residents with more mobility options.
According to him, Lagos is implementing its rail, road and water transport projects as an integrated system to ensure effective connectivity and enable commuters to conveniently switch between different modes of transportation.
On water transportation, Konyeha said the state was also expanding its waterways under the Omi Eko initiative, which involves opening additional water routes and deploying energy-efficient electric ferries to promote sustainable mobility.
Responding, Akindolire commended the Lagos State Government for prioritising transportation projects with direct benefits for residents. He urged other states to adopt similar development strategies by investing in projects capable of making tangible improvements in the lives of their people.
The NEC delegation’s visit provided an opportunity to assess the progress of the Red Line and its role in Lagos State’s broader plan to develop an integrated, efficient and sustainable transportation system.
