Nigerians online have expressed displeasure over the reported high fares on the newly introduced airport taxi service on the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) app.

The controversy followed revelations that a ride from the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, to Ikeja could cost as much as N30,000, significantly higher than fares available on conventional e-hailing platforms.

The development came to light after travel content creator Chris Joondeph, known as “Authentic Travelling”, shared a video on TikTok of his experience at the Lagos airport, where he sought the cost of a ride to the Radisson Blu Hotel in Ikeja.

FAAN decided to ban Uber and Bolt at airports, then went ahead to launch its own ‘FAANTaxi’ app.

The price is pegged at ₦30,000 for a trip from Ikeja Airport to Radisson

Meanwhile, an Uber ride for that distance usually never exceeds ₦8,000.

The airport car-hire platform, ACHRAMS, lists journeys from the airport to the city centre at between N10,000 and N20,000.

Trips to suburbs are priced between N20,000 and N30,000, while inter-state journeys reportedly cost between N30,000 and N60,000.

A comparison for a trip from Murtala Muhammed International Airport to the Radisson Hotel in Ikeja showed a substantial price difference.

According to the comparison, Bolt listed the journey at N6,900, while Uber quoted N4,200 for UberX and N5,800 for its Priority option.

At N30,000, the reported ACHRAMS fare is approximately 335 per cent higher than Bolt, 614 per cent higher than UberX and 417 per cent higher than Uber Priority for the same journey.

The disparity has triggered reactions across social media, with some Nigerians questioning the justification for the airport service’s pricing.

Critics have particularly raised concerns over the cost of journeys within Lagos, arguing that fares of up to N30,000 could place an additional burden on travellers arriving at the airport.
