Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called for the immediate release of schoolchildren, pupils, and teachers abducted by terrorists in Oyo State, urging their captors to act out of “humanity and conscience.”

In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Wednesday, Obi expressed shock over reports concerning the condition of the victims, describing the incident as a painful reflection of the worsening security situation in the country.

He appealed directly to the abductors to release the victims without delay, stressing that every child represents a family’s hope and future, and calling for compassion and urgent action to end their captivity.

Meanwhile, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, also condemned the abduction, describing it as another sign of Nigeria’s deteriorating security environment.

In a statement issued through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said the incident underscores what he described as the government’s inability to effectively tackle insecurity.

He further criticised reports that government officials had been sent to affected families with relief materials, arguing that such gestures do not address the immediate anguish of parents whose children remain in captivity.
